PANTELHÓ, THE TOWN THAT CHANGED CRIME FOR THE COLORS OF ITS LOOMS.
Pantelhó is located in the Highlands Socioeconomic Region with groups of Tsotsil and Tseltal origin.
In Pantelhó, one of the poorest municipalities in Mexico, the work of women artisans with backstrap looms has flourished. They make blouses, cushions, scarves, table runners, pens and cushions. All this, with the seal of their creativity and a work that is never paid even 30 percent. The craftswomen have joined together to make all kinds of embroidered looms. They have modernized, because in Casa de las Artesanías de Chiapas they are asked for shiny garments, whose cost per garment can shoot up to 60 percent of the price at which they were acquired.
According to data from the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy, Pantelhó is in ninth place among the 15 poorest municipalities in the country.
For now, the textiles of Pantelhó's artisans are marketed in their homes and in Just Artisan Marketplace.
