Grandes Maestros - Florencia Espinal Ramirez
Preserving the traditions of the queras of Olinalá, Florencia and Vicente Castillo continue with the tradition of creating laquered boxes. They live in the southwestern part of Mexico, located in the state of Guerrero. These artisans use the same wood as previous generations: resistant varieties of olin aloe and piñon.
In the past, their town received more tourism, but due to the constant drug trafficking activities in the area, tourism has decreased considerably. The economic uncertainty has prompted them to seek creative ways to make a living, and they are responding to that need. They aim to keep the name of Olinalá alive for future generations, which is why they participate in fairs and exhibitions, improve their marketing, and promote their work, traditions, and techniques.
