My next muse is my father’s sister, Cristina Mejia Lemus, a woman with remarkable resilience. She was the mother of two sons, Arnulfo and Virgilio. In her younger years, she dedicated herself fully to raising them, and later decided to study dentistry — a profession she practiced until her final days.

My Aunt Cristina loved life, even while facing some of the hardest challenges imaginable. She was my personal dentist, as I was always nervous about dental visits. She had a way of making me feel calm and welcome, always greeting me with a warm and contagious smile.

She left this world on March 22 due to pulmonary fibrosis, a complication that developed after she had COVID and continued working tirelessly despite her condition. Not long before she passed, I went to visit her — we almost missed each other because she had gone to see a patient at her clinic in Ciudad Azteca. The patient never showed up, and she returned home — that was the last time I saw her alive. I still remember her saying, “Hey, that little bag is one of yours, right? I like it — I’ll order one soon.” She was a loyal fan of Quetzalt and had bought several of our handbags.

My Cristina Belt Bag will carry her name, honoring her life and spirit — a woman who faced every hardship with grace, courage, and a radiant smile.

I love you dearly, Aunt Cristina. Rest in peace.
