Grandes Maestros - Maria Trinidad Gonzalez Garcia
Martina Garcia (1941) from the community of El Mejay in the state of Hidalgo, is the mother of Maria Trinidad (1968).
Martina learned to weave, to prepare the loom, and to weave beautiful figures. She has dedicated her life to weaving, without leaving it for a single moment; it has become her livelihood. She learned from Margarita Hernandez, a commissioner of the Indigenous Heritage of the Mezquital Valley.
Martina was very grateful for the knowledge her teacher, Margarita, imparted to her. As a result of that teaching, Martina has replicated the teaching of the backstrap loom with hundreds of women both inside and outside her community, among them her daughter, Trinidad. They make quexquémitl, shawls, backpacks, blouses, tablecloths, and dresses, among other pieces, from cotton or ixtle threads.
