SAN ANDRES LARRAINZAR, HEART OF THE REVOLUTION TO PROTECT THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE.
San Andrés Larráinzar is a municipality in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, located in the region known as Los Altos. Its inhabitants belong to the Tsotsil cultural and linguistic ethnic group, which, in turn, is part of the Mayan Culture. The name "San Andrés" refers to its patron saint whose feast day is celebrated on November 30. The name of the municipality for the Zapatistas is Sakamch′en de los Pobres.
This municipality has had a prominent role during the 1994 war in which the Zapatista uprising occurred, since it was in the head of this municipality where the San Andres Accords were signed, that is, the agreement established between the Mexican Government and the E.Z.L.N. to end the war.
The municipality manufactures garments, bags, jarcieria, ceramics, palm articles and wood products.
Visiting San Andrés Larraínzar takes us to the heart of the Zapatista movement, you will be able to talk with leaders of the movement, as long as the customs and traditions of the population are fully respected, and in every contact with the indigenous people of the region always keep all possible respect, no matter how strange their customs may seem to you, since our customs will also seem strange to them.
